Horse owners are always on alert for signs of injury or illness in their equines. Much can go wrong quickly if we don’t know what to do. This was addressed at a recent educational event organized by the Newtown Bridle Lands Association and presented by Rachel Powers, DVM of Fairfield Equine Associates. The presentation, Equine First Aid, was held on Tuesday July 16 at the practice’s facility on Barnabas Rd. Approximately 16 horse owners and riders attended the event which began with light snacks and ended with a tour of the facilities.
Dr. Powers discussed a number of scenarios when a horse owner would want to call their veterinarian: colic, choking, abscess, laceration, eyeball issues, fever or a horse that is down. In each instance, she explained what the vet will want to know when you call, what you should do while awaiting the vet’s arrival, what the vet will do to treat the horse, and after care. She also shared a list of recommended items to have in your equine first aid kit.
After the presentation concluded, Stephanie Lengel, Practice Manager, took the group on a tour of the Fairfield Equine complex, including two ICU stalls for post-operative patients, and the operating room which is specially designed to allow the sedation and transport of horses to a padded operating table. Alycia Crandall, DVM and DACVS, recently joined the practice as a surgical specialist and she explained to the group how horses can be either on their side or back depending on the type of surgery needed. New advances in monitoring and assisting sedated animals now in use at Fairfield Equine have resulted in quicker recovery times.
